When & Where - The First Chamber

The chambre de commerce of Marseilles (1599) was the first organization to use the name; the idea spread through France in the 17th and 18th century. 

The first to be formed in Great Britain was on the island of Jersey (1768). In America the first was the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York, organized in 1768. By 1870 there were 40 throughout the United States. The local chambers are federated in the United States Chamber of Commerce (founded 1912 

Some Reasons to Join a Chamber


A study by the Shapiro Group that was commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) with support from the Small Business Network, Inc. showed that when consumers know a small business is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and 64% more likely to purchase good and services from that company in the future. Most consumers (59%) think being active in the local Chamber of Commerce in an effective business strategy overall. It is 20% more effective for communicating to consumers that a business uses good business practices and 26% more effective for communicating the business is reputable.(3)
